Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa – warm greetings to everyone

Kia ora, Nameste, Talofa, Konnichiwa, Guten Tag , Gidday, Vannakkam, ni Hao, Kia orana, Hola, Salam, Sa wat dee kha, Dia Dhuit, Goeie Dag, Bonjour, Hello, (please let us know the greeting in your language if it is not here)

Korero from the Principal:

Kia ora e te whanau. It has been a while since I have managed a newsletter. Arohamai, sorry! I have been very busy covering staff in absences as we navigate a shortage of teachers alongside winter illnesses.
Lately we have had a few TANTRUMS, MELTDOWNS, EXPLOSIVE OUTBURSTS … whatever you want to call them, many children and many adults experience anger as a dominant emotion. However, often underlying emotions are at play like shame, anxiety, overwhelm, frustration … the list goes on. It is important for our tamariki to understand what is causing their anger so they can recognise the triggers. Anger, like all emotions, is normal and we shouldn’t feel bad for experiencing it or try to stop it. Suppressing emotions may not be the answer. In the Wildlings book, LET IT GO, they talk about working out healthy and safe ways to allow emotions to flow, instead of learning to bottle them inside us. Learning to experience an emotion, label it, give it space, hear its message and work out a healthy and safe way to express, it may help our children (and us adults) to learn to really connect with our emotions. To understand what is actually happening and to not hold uncomfortable emotions within us.
We have this book in school and read it to the children to help them understand other ways of dealing with anger rather than lashing out at other people. It might be helpful to have at home too?  www.wildlingbooks.com

Matariki:

Please support our wonderful iwi, Ngati Tahu Ngati Whaoa with their Matariki Celebrations!

The Ngati Tahu – Ngati Whaoa Runanga present Te Kotahitanga a Matariki Feast Celebration.

With your food basket (contributions of food, resources or volunteer your time) and our food basket we will celebrate Matariki together.

During the cold, foggy winter season our people would return to our papakainga which were usually situated by geothermal activity, Nga ruahuwai a Tahumatua. This Matariki we invite our iwi and Reporoa community to join us by registering and contributing for our Matariki Feast, as we gather at Ohaki Pa.

We begin with the Pohutukawa star to welcome manuhiri and acknowledge our loved ones who have passed. Then followed by Kapa Haka activities to warm the bodies, voices and wairua. Which will lead us into Te Kotahitanga a Matariki feast prepared by everyone. We close our celebrations with Hiwa-i-te-rangi, the wishing star. Everyone who has gathered will be given the opportunity to speak or sing and share about their gratitude’s of the year or aspirations, desires and goals for the iwi and community for the new year.

REGISTRATIONS will close on the 7th of July 2023

Hillary Outdoors Leadership Camp:

On June the 5th 2023, when it was the king’s birthday, we left for Hillary Outdoors! Since we got there, we had lots of fun doing all the action-packed activities they had to offer!

We went on a zipline, we went into the bush, we went to high ropes, we went abseiling, we went caving, we did kayaking, we went on a long hike and we played some fun games! We did all these activities while having lots of fun!

We even went to Burger King and McDonalds for dinner on Monday and Friday!

All their activities were challenging and pushed us out of our comfort zone, but in the end we all had fun!

Irie and Oliver said they enjoyed everything, Milton mostly enjoyed the zipline, and Rhiannon enjoyed Kayaking!

We all thought that it wasn’t hard when we gave it a go. Hillary Outdoors taught us to push ourselves a little out of our comfort zone and try things we are hesitant to do.

We would like to thank all the people who supported us and bought something that we sold and helped us pay off the bill so we could enjoy this wonderful camp!

Mid Year Reports:

On Friday the Mid Year Reports will go live. These are online. You will need a HERO log in to read it and will receive an email alert. Instructions are at the bottom of every newsletter on how to log in to the HERO app.

This year our reading and writing graphs may look a little bit different. This is because we have merged the Structured Literacy approach into our level 1 and some of level 2 goals. It means things have shifted slightly. If you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch with the classroom teacher to discuss. You are also more than welcome to come in and see me!

Stars of the week:

Ka rawe te mahi to Loki Tuhi for his awesome writing mahi last week!

Kapa Haka Uniforms:

A very big thank you to Whaea Gemma for driving the update of our Kapa Haka Uniforms. We are doing really well this year in our Kapa Haka mahi and think we deserve to look fantastic on the stage when it is the Reporoa Taiopenga (Cultural Festival) time! We would also like to tank the Whanau Group for paying half of the big bill that comes with such fancy uniforms!

Thankyou to all our whanau and staff that navigated our school cross country, despite major staff absences, you all banded together to make sure our tamariki had an enjoyable day. Cluster was another success with lots of whanau on board to get our tamariki out there representing our kura. Well done to Saige Phillips who will move on to represent our kura in the Bay of Plenty Cross Country event in Opotiki next week.
